When AI Reads the Clay: A Scholar's Unease in the Ancient Near East

A cuneiform scholar reflects on how machine learning is transforming the study of ancient Mesopotamia, and why the human touch still matters in reading history from clay.

The Algorithm and the Tablet

I never expected to watch a neural network translate a Sumerian administrative text. Last month at a conference in Chicago, I sat in the back row while a colleague projected a screen: broken clay tablets, and beside them, a running English translation, generated in seconds. The room applauded. I felt a knot in my stomach.

It's not that the technology isn't impressive. It is. But I've spent twenty years hunched over these texts. I know the feel of a tablet's surface, the way the wedges catch the light, the patience it takes to decipher a damaged line. An algorithm doesn't know any of that. It just computes.

What the Machine Misses

Take a simple barley receipt from Ur III. A machine sees a list: amounts, names, dates. It might flag it as 'routine administrative record.' But I remember a specific tablet from my doctoral work—a receipt for barley that, when I traced the context, turned out to be evidence of a famine that led to the fall of a dynasty. The signs themselves were mundane. The meaning was everything.

Or consider a Mari letter, broken at the edges. A friend of mine spent two years on a single fragment. He learned to recognize the scribe's hand, the type of clay, the reason a line was erased. That's not just reading; it's intimacy. AI could process it in minutes, but it would never feel the weight of the words.

The Seduction of Speed

I'll admit, I use digital tools. Image enhancement has helped me read texts too faint for my eyes. Databases catalogue millions of artifacts. These are blessings. They free us from drudgery.

But there's a line. When I see projects that feed an entire royal inscription into a generator and get a neat summary—'Assurnasirpal II boasts of conquests'—I worry. History is not a summary. The boasting, the hyperbole, the missing names—those are part of the story. Strip them away, and you lose the texture of human ambition and fear.

At a recent excavation, we used LIDAR to map a site in days that would have taken months on foot. That was magnificent. But I also remember the joy of kneeling in the dirt, brushing away dust to reveal a foundation stone. There's no algorithm for that connection.

Slow Reading, Deep Understanding

I teach my students to copy an Old Babylonian contract by hand. They grumble. But by the end, they understand something no lecture can convey: the pressure of the stylus, the care in each sign, the physical act of creating a record. That experience shapes how they interpret the past.

There's a beauty in the slowness. You sit with a tablet, try a reading, doubt yourself, walk away, come back a week later with fresh eyes. It's not efficient. It's humble. And it's how real understanding forms.

Keeping the Human in History

I keep returning to a scene from a film I watched years ago—a character says, 'Without people, civilization is meaningless.' That sticks with me. The ancient Near East is not just data. It's the record of people who loved, fought, prayed, and feared. They deserve more than a summary.

So I'll keep my stylus close. I'll keep squinting at clay. And I hope that future scholars still take the time to hold a tablet, feel its weight, and let it speak—not just scan it into a database.
